After lots of tests, they determined that Eli had a sub-dural hemorrhage and they assume that the bleeding had been the cause of his crying for some time now.
Well, after the blood had accumulated at the base of his brain stem it started to clot and when it clotted it pushed on his brain stem and put him in a coma like state. Or in other words, shut him down. So, just like a bruise, the blood that had accumulated had to be reabsorbed by his body and as it did, little by little, it put less and less pressure on his brain and he slowly woke up.
It was a whirlwind hospital stay. At first they thought it was a brain tumor and there was nothing left to do. We thought it was the end and got a DNR. Then we found out it was manageable and he might recover. There was still nothing they could do, but they assumed it would get better and it did.
It took a week for him to open his eyes, and then another week to move his head and stretch. Then about two more weeks to get back to making any noises. Then about another 2 weeks before he stopped throwing up. From the time he opened his eyes there was over a month where there was constant throwing up. But we are all doing extremely well now.
And, it seems that his seizures have decreased now too. Maybe all the activity we had been seeing in the 4 to 5 months beforehand was due to the bleeding; who knows?
Right now the biggest struggle for him is to relax. His muscles are very tight.
So here is a run down of what we have been up to since Eli has been feeling better.
Eli did some postural drainage,
Eli started making happy faces and noises again,
